Mount Stromlo Observatory is an astronomical observatory located in the Molonglo Valley, on the summit of Mount Stromlo, which is approximately 770 meters above sea level. The observatory was established in 1924 and has since been a significant center for astronomical research and education.

The observatory’s research focuses on the study of stars, galaxies, and other celestial objects. It is home to a number of telescopes, including the 74-inch telescope, the largest in Australia at the time it was built. In addition, the observatory also has a number of smaller telescopes that are used for a variety of research projects.

One of the observatory’s most significant contributions to astronomy was the development of the photometric system, which is used to measure the brightness of stars. This system was first proposed by an astronomer at the observatory, and it has since become the standard for measuring stellar brightness around the world.

In 2003, the observatory was severely damaged by a bushfire, which destroyed much of its infrastructure, including several telescopes and the administrative buildings. Despite this setback, the observatory has since been rebuilt, and it continues to be an important center for astronomical research and education in Australia.
